Come all ye lads and lassies & Celebrate St. Patty's Day with us this year at Beautiful Hanging Rock State Park. Two race distances will challenge you right from the start. This year, if you are fast enough, you may spot a leprechaun on the course too. The short course features a leprechaun Chase. Catch the leprechaun and discover where it keeps its pot o' gold. A whale of a time for all. Wearing green is optional.
May the trail rise to meet you and if this is your first trail race we advise you to sign up for the "short course".
The "short course" should be fine for the whole family just make sure your endurance level is at 4 miles or more. You will get all the twists, turns, elevation, roots, rocks, ...just in a limited amount.
Advanced? you better be on the 11K. You will travel the entire length of the Moores Knob trail, some of the highest elevations in the park. Be prepared for a big ole mountain of fun, and then some. The race starts in the Lake Parking area. Both race lengths follow the same direction from the start and begins on pavement for about a half mile(for spacing). At the Visitors Center Parking the pavement turns into a sidewalk type trail. Its a beautiful trail which goes on for another third of a mile. There is some elevation here. The sidewalk disappears and now its all roots and rocks for most of the remaining time. At about mile 3, the Short course turns back and heads toward the finish line. The Long Course begins its ascent up the mountain. This uphill climb is very technical , a virtual "rock garden" to run through. As the Long Course, just shy of the top, starts down, the trail turns into an amazing set of man made stairs. At the bottom of the stairs you are just a hop, skip and a jump from the finish. NO WALKERS on the 11K, please.
Hanging Rock State Park Not far from the cities of the Triad area, off the four-lane highways there's another North Carolina to be discovered sheer cliffs and peaks of bare rock, quiet forests and cascading waterfalls, views of the piedmont plateau that stretch for miles. Hike the trails of Hanging Rock State Park and let nature put life's hectic pace in perspective. Rent a vacation cabin and fall asleep to the lullabies of spring peepers and chorus frogs. Join an interpretive program and discover something new about nature's bounty. Nestled in the hills is a cool mountain lake that beckons to swimmers and fishermen. Picnic areas and campgrounds lend themselves to time spent with family and friends. Hanging Rock State Park awaits you.
